StarBorn was founded in the late 1970s by Zanoni Silverknife and Moondancer. Both founders were originally trained and initiated within the Georgian Tradition. Zanoni served as a founding priestess alongside the late George Patterson, while Moondancer was an initiate of the second Georgian coven.
Between 1973 and 2004, Zanoni and Moondancer collaborated as needed, transitioning from practicing within the Georgian Tradition to establishing their own StarBorn Sothis tradition.
In 1980, Zanoni, Moondancer, and Rowan Ambersdaughter attended a Beltane ritual in the northern California Central Valley. During this rite, they experienced an unusual event involving trance contact with an entity that would later become central to their work. This experience marked a turning point and served as the catalyst for the development of what would eventually be known as StarBorn.
In the years following that 1980 Beltane event, Zanoni and Moondancer began to articulate and refine the ideas that emerged from that contact.
While Moondancer served as Zanoni’s High Priest across several of her covens, beginning with the Sacred Grove of Vril in 1974 and continuing through Blue Star Cuveen in 1981, this period did not mark the end of their collaboration. With Raven’s introduction in 1981, she was included in the ongoing StarBorn discussions and development. In StarBorn, Raven is counted among the “Clan Mothers,” alongside Zanoni, Laughing Wind, and Rowan Ambersdaughter. In later years, Tabidee and Ash were added to this lineage as inheritors to Zanoni and Moondancer, respectively.
In its earliest form, StarBorn was not conceived as a Craft tradition. Rather, it was envisioned as a family or clan rediscovering itself through shared memory and identity. From the beginning, it was understood that not all members of the Clan would be practitioners of the Craft. This perspective is reflected in early writings that refer to the Clan, Clan StarBorn, or the Blue Star Clan, and should not be confused with the Wiccan Blue Star Tradition, which is an entirely different and unrelated path of Witchcraft. Only later did the focus gradually shift, and StarBorn evolved into something more closely resembling a formal Craft tradition.
Over time, their individual focuses diverged, giving rise to separate lines or streams within StarBorn. Over the decades since its inception, four such streams emerged: Sothis, added by Zanoni to distinguish her later evolution of the current from its earliest forms; Starseeker, established by Moondancer; Starseeds, now in radio silence following the loss of its original platform; and StarGroup, which collapsed following the loss of its central figure with the passing of Laughing Wind in 2006.
Of the two active StarBorn lines, Sothis continues through Zanoni’s chosen heir, while Starseeker proceeds under the guidance and direction of Raven and Ash. Although these lines remain distinct in leadership and expression, the StarBorn currents themselves continue to flow and interconnect.
While StarBorn is entirely separate from anything practiced within Nemed Cuculatii, elements of the StarBorn current contributed to the shaping of the foundational ground from which Nemed Cuculatii later emerged. This influence belongs to the realm of historical formation rather than ongoing practice, and there is no structural, initiatory, or operational overlap between the two.
As the song says “We are stardust, we are golden, and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.” — and that is something with which the work of Nemed Cuculatii resonates.
